01Garbage disposals
Each of these points somewhere different. The cause is confirmed at the sink.
A disposal’s seals and connections fail with age. Water under the cabinet is worth catching early, before the cabinet floor swells.
The motor is running but the plate is jammed. Never reach inside. With the power off, the jam can usually be cleared from underneath the unit.
A tripped reset, a seized motor, or a unit that has reached the end of its life. A quick check tells which.
Food waste packed into the drain line below the unit, or a disposal that no longer grinds finely. The unit and the line beneath it are checked together.
Something hard caught in the chamber, or worn parts inside the unit. Which one it is decides between a small repair and a replacement.
02In the meantime
None of this repairs the disposal. All of it keeps the sink safe to be near.
Switch the disposal off and keep hands and utensils out of it, even while it is silent. A unit can start if power is restored or a jam releases.
More water or food sent into a jammed or leaking disposal adds to the problem, and water can back up into the other basin.
A bucket or towels under the unit protect the cabinet floor from water escaping at its seals and connections.
Whether it hums, stays silent, drains slowly or leaks, and where the water appears. That detail usually points at the cause.

03Urgency
Most disposal trouble only takes a sink out of use. A leak or a burning smell does more.
04Repair or replace
Most disposal problems are a jam or a connection. A few mean the unit has reached its end.
A jam, a tripped overload or a leaking drain or dishwasher connection can often be resolved without replacing the disposal.
Water leaking from the housing of the unit, or a motor that has failed, more often makes replacement the practical option than a repair.
05Why it happens
A disposal grinds food into small particles and relies on water to carry them away. Fibrous peels, starchy food that swells, grease that sets as it cools and hard material like bones do not break down cleanly. They wrap around the grinding parts, jam the plate or settle in the drain line below the sink.
That is why a disposal problem and a drain problem often arrive together. A jammed unit is usually a quick repair, but food packed into the line beneath it can keep a sink draining slowly even after the disposal is working again.
06Cost
No two jobs take the same work. These change it most.
Clearing a jam or remaking a connection is a small job. A replacement adds the unit itself and its installation.
A more powerful or more heavily built disposal costs more than a basic one that fits the same sink.
A dishwasher drain connection, the electrical hookup or mounting hardware that no longer fits all add to an installation.
A line packed with food waste beneath the unit needs clearing as well as the disposal itself.
07Questions
Grease, bones, fibrous vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells and anything starchy that swells. Cold water while it runs, and for a few seconds after, keeps the drain clearer.
The motor is getting power but the grinding plate cannot move, usually because something is wedged in the chamber. Running it in that state can overheat the motor, so it is best left switched off until the jam is cleared.
Food residue caught under the splash guard, on the grinding parts or in the drain line below. Plenty of cold water while it runs carries waste through, and a smell that persists can point to a partial clog further down.
Water that cannot be stopped, sewage coming up, no water at all, or a smell of gas: urgent. A drip, a slow drain or a running toilet: worth fixing soon, but not tonight. When in doubt, shut off the water to the fixture and ask.
Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.
